We Are Family
The work in We Are Family speaks to the messy and complicated relationships of family. I use the term family broadly not only to include the traditional family but also any close knit group of people connected by some sort of ties. Families can be wacky- sometimes nurturing sometimes neglectful. They can be places of belonging but also exclusion. In this series, I use organic, anthropomorphic forms to represent figures whose shapes intertwine and overlap, showing both friction and calmness as well as creating visual metaphors for lineage, inheritance, and the tension between individuality and collective identity.
